We live in a world where people are hungry to find something solid, reliable and unchanging to feed their souls. Although many are distracted by entertainment masquerading as Christianity, or by the many concerns of this world, at their very hearts they know they need to get back to the ancient Apostolic roots of the Faith.
This is the Orthodox Church. Saint George is one of the five Orthodox parishes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Each parish is unique as well as fully joined to one another despite being in different jurisdictions (under different bishops). Our Grand Rapids parishes join together for worship, common events—like our Summer Youth program, and common causes.
Saint George parish is the oldest Orthodox church in western Michigan, being first organized in 1906 and made a parish community in 1907 by Saint Raphael (Hawaweeny) of Brooklyn. We are part of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. Our community’s roots are from Lebanon, but there are many who have joined our parish from European ancestry too. We are a very warm and welcoming community.
If you enjoy a good choir, then you will find a wonderful all volunteer choir here at Saint George. While we primarily sing music from the Byzantine tradition (which has been Americanized), we also sing some Russian music as well.
If you are seeking a “holy space” in which to pray, then you will find one of the most beautiful churches in western Michigan here. You will find praying here deeply moving.
If you desire to develop new friendships and a deeper Christian fellowship, you will be embraced by the warmth and charity of our parishioners. Join us for our coffee hour after the Divine Liturgy and allow us to introduce you to our community.

Organization Overview: St. Mary Orthodox Church is a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of north America. In February, 1972, St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church was born when a young priest named Fr. George Shalhoub was ordained and assigned to a small parish in Livonia, Michigan with no church building to call their own. Five years later, in 1977, the Community was blessed to have Metropolitan PHILIP preside over the dedication of their brand new church building located on Merriman road and finally had a place to call home. Then in 1991, the completion of the cultural center, next door to the church, opened and has been a consistent meeting place for the people of this parish.
The goal for every ministry program at the Basilica of St. Mary is no different than the goal for leading a strong Orthodox Christian way of life. This goal is realized through providing opportunities for each person to be fully integrated into the total life of the Church by helping them to commit to living their faith through worship, witness, service and fellowship.
The success of this goal is based upon building a foundation of strong relationships with each other that are rooted in love, honesty, trust, openness, respect and forgiveness. These six pillars of our Christian faith, when integrated together, work to build up a strong Christian way of life.

WHO ARE WE?

WHAT DO ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS BELIEVE?
The principal tenets of the Orthodox faith are contained in the Nicene/Constantinopolitan Creed (commonly called the Nicene Creed). Orthodox Christians believe in the Blessed Trinity, the Divinity of Christ, His virgin birth and His glorious resurrection. The Orthodox church is in direct continuity with the Church founded by Jesus Christ. It does not trace its origins to any other reformer or founder. The Orthodox Church is a very traditional church in matters of faith and worship.
HOW DOES A PERSON BECOME A MEMBER OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH?
Ordinarily, a person becomes a member of the Orthodox Church by being born again of water and the Holy Spirit in the Sacraments of Baptism and Chrismation (Confirmation). Adults who have been baptized in non-Orthodox churches become members by a profession of faith and the Sacrament of Chrismation. This occurs after a period of instruction in the Orthodox faith.
