Community Organizing

Organization Overview:  Saints Peter & Paul Romanian Orthodox Church is a parish under the jurisdiction of The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America, headquartered in Detroit/Jackson, Michigan, having as its ruling Archbishop NATHANIEL (Popp). The current parish membership lists almost 400 dues-paying adults, but the parish ministers to a larger Romanian Orthodox community including children and non-committed communicants, visitors, etc. The parish is made-up of both American and Romanian born Orthodox Christians, which deems it necessary that the life of the parish is a bi-lingual one. However, special care is given to the realization that our practices and culture must, in some ways, adapt themselves to the American environment in order for us to have a greater impact on our community and future generations. Organization Name:  Umbrella Tree
Organization Overview:  Welcome to the Umbrella Tree! We are glad you stopped by. Our vision is to provide resources to local immigrant communities to help them grow and thrive. We do this by asking local communities a few simple questions: what do you need? what do you have? And, how can we partner together to meet those needs? Right now we are serving in Hamtramck, Michigan. Why Hamtramck? Hamtramck is one of the most diverse small cities in the nation. It has been said that Hamtramck is “The world in 2 square miles” with 26 different languages being spoken within it’s 2.2 square mile radius. That’s a lot of different people in a small area! Many of these people are immigrants who are fleeing difficult challenges in their homeland (economic, political or religious) in hopes to find a better life here in America. But, you know it’s a difficult transition to make. If you speak little or no English you can’t become a citizen, find a job, get a driver’s license etc…much less feel like you are a part of your new community. That’s where we come in! Umbrella Tree seeks to provide you and your community with the resources to help you grow and thrive. These resources include English as a second language (ESL) classes and mobile tutoring, Job Training Courses, Basic Computer Classes and community restoration and development projects. Our hope is that through these services local immigrant communities in the greater Detroit area will not only be equipped to realize their goals and dreams…but exceed them!
