St. Mary Church was started in 1857 to serve the German population in the Grand Rapids area. In 1873, the original church building was replaced with our landmark Gothic-style building, designed by the eminent architect Franz G. Himpler. It is one of the oldest extant Catholic Churches in GR. The parish recently completed extensive repair and restoration work on the church building to ensure that it continues to support the work of the people in the years to come. These church walls have heard prayers for over 135 years. Faith has been nourished and strengthened and handed on to the following generations. St. Mary now serves a diverse population of English and Spanish-speaking Catholics. You are welcome to stop in!

Organization Name:  Sikh Gurdwara of Rochester Hills
Organization Overview:  Every Sikh is under an obligation and is required to submit himself to the order of the Khalsa. This is a pledge to remain under control, governance of the Ultimate reality. Amritdhari is the honour of being a member of the Panth (a disciplined force of God). A Sikh must live life according to the terms of Sikhism. There is general understanding that a novice must have a “lent period” during which he/she must prepare to go the way of Guru with a voluntary and firm decision to change his/her life style, they must desire to and be willing to live their life by the values and virtues of Gurmat. Then and only then, the novice will become worthy to get the gift of Almighty Lord’s grace and attain eternal unity. Some people are of the view that initiation may be administered to a boy or girl when he or she reaches an intelligent age.

Organization Overview:  The Sikh Society of West Michigan was established in 1999. A handful of Sikh families started this society. The first big endeavor was the 300th celebration of Vaisakhi (Birth of the Khalsa) about 300 families attended the free event sponsored by a few Sikh families. From a handful of Sikhs to over a hundred families our community has blossomed. Because of all the support of these families a spectacular Gurudwara was inaugurated in April of 2006. From 2006 to now we have formed a loyal and still growing Sangat (the families) and we also have a place where anyone can go to pray or to find out more about the Sikh religion, or even just to see the building and learn about the culture. The Gurudwara is a place where all are welcome, it doesn’t matter what your faith is as long as you respect our traditions of removing your shoes and covering your head we are happy to invite everyone to see it. We encourage people to learn about the Sikh religion, because the Grand Rapids and Muskegon sangat confidently say, “We are Proud to be Sikhs.” The Gurudwara is a place where you can achieve spiritual bliss, we believe all good fortune and happiness comes from this. If in the back of your mind you’re wondering “what is the essence of Sikhism?” In my understanding it is that that god is one, Ik Onkar, no matter how you perceive him. The biggest and most important proof of this is the martyrdom of 9th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, who sacrificed himself to protect another religion, Hinduism. And in his footsteps followed his son the 10th Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who sacrificed everything he had for these principles. But all of these great sacrifices stand on the shoulders of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the 1st Guru and founder of Sikhism, without his simple and enlightened teachings there would be no Sikh religion. All of the 10 gurus live through a holy scripture, but not just a scripture, an 11th guru and a way of life, the teachings of all the gurus are in this holy scripture which gives us the guidance we need to make it across the ocean of this worldly life successfully.

Organization Overview:  All visitors to a Sikh Gurdwara should be aware of the following guidelines when visiting: Please dress appropriately so that you can comfortably and with decency sit on the carpeted floor. It is recommended that all visitors to the Gurdwara wear loose fitting clothing which covers most of your legs. Low hanging or tight-fitting pants may not be suitable. Please try sitting on the carpeted floor at home for a short period to see if the clothing is suitable. All visitors entering the Main Prayer Hall, called the Darbar Sahib and the Dining (Langar) Hall will have to remove their shoes and place them in the shoe racks provided. No smoking is allowed in the vicinity of the Gurdwara premises. Visitors cannot enter the Gurdwara while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. You should not take cigarettes or tobacco with you into the premises or smoke while near the Gurdwara or soon before going into the Gurdwara. All visitors MUST cover their heads while in the main Gurdwara areas. The Gurdwara usually has a box of scarves, but you can bring your own headscarf for this purpose. Other hats and caps (e.g. baseball-style caps) may not appropriate (please check with the Gurdwara officials). Sikh men normally wear a turban. Sikh ladies usually wear a "Chunni", which is normally a long, flowing, semi-transparent plain cloth with a decorated, veiled edging. Chairs are not provided in the Gurdwara (except for those with medical conditions) and so, when sitting, this will be on the carpeted floor both in the Main Prayer Hall (Darbar Sahib) and in the Langar Hall. On first entering the large prayer room (called the Darbar Sahib), a small bow to the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy book) shows respect to the host community. Backs should not be turned on the Guru Granth Sahib or the soles of the feet pointed towards the Sikh holy book when sitting on the carpet (as a mark of respect). It is normal to sit cross-legged yoga style. It may be a good idea to practice this at home if possible before your trip to the Gurdwara. Visitors will usually be offered Kara Parshad (sweet flour and oil based food offered as a gift) in the worship hall, which is usually given in cupped hands and eaten with the right hand. If you are uncertain about your ability to eat a lot of this food – Say “very small portion” to the Sewadar (volunteer) serving the Kara Parshad. You should take a small plastic bag (or ask for one from the Sewadar (volunteer) serving the Kara Parshad) to save your Kara Parshad if it is not to your taste – Please do not refuse it or throw it away. You may be offered Langar (vegetarian food from the communal kitchen). If not too certain about consuming this food you can ask to be excused although most people should take langar as it is regarded as a blessing by the Guru. When in the Langar Hall, it is better to ask for less rather than take too much and waste the food. Say “very little” to the Sewadar (volunteer) serving the Langar. If you require more later, just wait for the Sewadar to come around.
